Don't Set Fire to Your eMail Practicing By BIG Mike McDaniel

It has happened to all of us. A pop-off remark atthe wrong time, without thinking has caused a lotof grief. Sometimes it can be schmoozed over andsometimes the rift created is permanent. You mayhave seen the clever signs like "Engage BrainBefore Operating Mouth".
The same applies to eMail messages. All it takessome hastily typed words and a click on send and"poof" there is no taking it back. Unlike theverbal pop-off, an eMail "Flame" does not give youthe opportunity to see the receiver's face andrealize that you made a boo boo.
This advice is not only for messages originated byyou, but for replies to messages received by youas well. Remember the receiver has no way ofseeing your emotion when you sent it and you haveno way of seeing the reaction when received.Perhaps the message that set you on fire was notmeant that way. Before you melt the Internet witha flaming message or reply, practice restraint.
1. Get into the habit of composing your eMailmessage off-line (most often in your wordprocessor). Once ready to send you can highlightand save the message to the clipboard and paste itinto your eMail blank. This gives you days orweeks to ponder the viability of venting yourkeyboard. After a day or two, a revisit to theproposed response might need a complete re-write.
2. Always include enough of the original eMail inyour reply to tie the messages together. When youpress reply, your eMail program will automaticallypaste the entire message in your reply. Don't keepthe entire message. Highlight and delete theextras, leaving the words that prompt your reply.
3. Ask your eMail program to put all outgoingmessages in a "queue". In that way when you press"send" the messages are stacked up to be sent at apredetermined time (every so many minutes, or whenyou close your program). The queue gives you a fewshort minutes as a last chance to change yourmind.
Learn to keep your emotions in tow. Once you mailthe eMail, there is no turning back. Don't sayanything in an eMail message you would not sayface to face.
If someone sends you an e-mail message thatstrikes you as just a little too critical, or youread a message in a discussion group that seems alittle too offensive, chances are that you'remisinterpreting the intent of the sender. Perhapsa message that you are taking seriously wasintended to be taken sarcastically!
Haste-Before-Send will only serve to dump fuel ona fire of what could potentially become a "flamewar," with combatants engaging in pointless verbalwarfare, usually as the result of a misinterpretedmessage or an undiscriminating author.
