Credit Cards

By Steve

With convenience driving most choices in modern day living, it isn't surprising that credit cards have become among the most popular financial tools worldwide. By relieving your overstuffed wallet of the weight of currency bills and giving you the freedom to buy today and pay later, credit cards have virtually become a way of life for millions - especially in the U.S.

Whether you have good credit or bad, there is a credit card out there for you. You can choose between an unsecured and a secured credit card. For a secured credit card – which is generally given to people with substantially damaged credit – you need to put down a large deposit that then becomes the limit to which you can spend on the card. An unsecured card does not require you to pay the deposit, which is why you can start using it right away. The spending limit on unsecured cards is generally higher.

If you are shopping for a credit card , be sure to ask for information about a wide range of products and compare features like the annual percentage rate (APR, which is the interest you pay on your outstanding balance), annual fee, late payment fee and grace period for payments. There is also a fee charged for cash advances that you should find out about. Some leading banks and financial institutions offer very attractive credit cards with low APR, no annual fee and great rewards schemes.

But beware, for credit cards have the power to reward the prudent and ruin the irresponsible. To those who manage their finances well, credit cards are a great aid that they can count on for emergencies and to make quick high-value purchases whenever the need arises. But in the hands of those who use them impulsively and without keeping track of their finances, credit cards can become a recipe for disaster.

What is great about credit cards is that they allow you to make purchases today and pay at a future date. They also give you the flexibility to pay a minimum deposit on your balance instead of the full sum, which is very helpful in difficult months. But using the minimum payment feature too often is an invitation to serious financial trouble. You must remember that the APR keeps ticking and if you are not careful you could be neck-deep in debt before you know it. Exceeding card limit also damages your credit record.

It isn't all gloom and doom though. If you have bad credit, getting a credit card could put you on the road to recovery. Paying your credit card balance on time over a sustained period will improve your credit score.
