You can consider them modern version of the walkmans, which plays music in digital formats rather than through CD’s and cassettes.

With reduction in the file size of the music files through MP3 format the capacity of the normal CD to store music increased. MP3 files made music very accessible to the people making them their own master. People no longer have to wait for their favorite song to be played by the radio stations.
